Opterus is working on the most innovative and game changing spacecraft deployable structures and mechanism technologies ever conceived. Four product lines have completed significant research and development phases and are well funded and on their way to commercialization. If you share an interest in space, structures, mechanisms, composites, and building cool things that will change the world, we invite you to join our team.
Opterus exists for three reasons – first, to fulfill a passion for cutting-edge advanced spacecraft structures. We love inventing, building, and bringing to market crazy advanced folding, deforming, and shape changing structures. We’re working on huge space-based solar power platforms, 10,000 square meter solar sails, cislunar radar systems, origami deployable reflectors, and more. Our second purpose is to provide a rewarding place to work by calming the chaos that plagues many startups in the new space industry. We are not VC funded, publicly traded, or otherwise driven to maximize financial output at your expense. Our purpose is to create an enabling, intellectually rewarding, healthy, and stable work environment where we can exercise our passion for structures and business. And third, yes, we’re here to make money. Unlike most startups that promise a payout far in the future if and when the company sells and all others have been paid, Opterus values employee growth plans that ensure you directly financially benefit from your hard work.
Opterus is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer at the III or higher level with experience working on spacecraft structural and mechanical systems. As our product lines mature, we require a technical leader to work with our research and development team to transition several products from the prototype and engineering development unit phase, through flight qualification, and handing off to production. Responsibilities will focus on technical leadership for research and development programs in the $1-10M range.
Opterus offers a hybrid work location policy with most employees choosing to work 1/3 of their time remote. Scheduling is also flexible with most employees choosing a compressed 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off. Opterus offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes paid holidays and time off; a 401(k) with matching funds; and life, AD&D, medical, and dental & vision insurances. Opterus pays 100% of employee and 70% of dependent health insurance premiums. Other perks: great culture, monthly company socials, and pets are welcome. Furthermore, the Fort Collins/Loveland area has a 40% lower cost of living than Boulder and is 10% lower cost than Denver.
Applicants should have at least 5 years of experience with spacecraft flight structures and mechanical systems and have a Bachelor of Science or higher degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering. Experience with flight hardware product data packages, deployable booms, solar arrays, and RF systems, SolidWorks, AS9100, and high-performance carbon fiber composites are all highly valued.
Candidates are required to be US citizens and to be able to obtain a US Department of Defense security clearance if needed.
Expected salary is $130,000 to $180,000 based on experience and qualifications.
